Radio Free Asia is reporting that a North Korean man who brought a copy of the hit Netflix show Squid Game into the country will be executed by firing squad. Seven high school students are also facing punishment after buying copies of the show on USB sticks; six of them face anywhere from five years of hard labor to life in prison, while the seventh won’t be punished after his wealthy parents bribed officials.
The arrests are the first time the newly passed “Elimination of Reactionary Thought and Culture” law has been applied to a case involving minors. The law carries a maximum penalty of death for watching, keeping, or distributing media from capitalist countries, especially those from South Korea or the United States.
