Daily Do Good: Volunteers Keep Christmas Light Tradition For COVID Survivor

Volunteers put up Christmas decorations for an Iowa couple overcoming severe complications related to COVID. Dale and Julie Marks live in a Des Moines neighborhood that’s well known for its over-the-top Christmas decorations. Every year, people come from all over the area to see the festive displays, but this year, the couple was afraid they weren’t going to be able to be a part of the holiday tradition.

Both Dale and Julie came down with COVID in September. Julie recovered after a couple of weeks, but her husband had a much more difficult time with the illness. Dale had to be admitted to the hospital after collapsing at their home one night. They later discovered he’d had two strokes and while at the hospital, he suffered a heart attack. He ended up spending almost a month in the hospital. And although Dale made it back home well before the decorations would need to be put up, he was in no condition to do the work.

When local contractor Bob Coffey heard through a mutual friend that Dale wouldn’t be able to put up his decorations he showed up at the Marks’ home with a crew to get the job done. He remembers seeing the lights in the neighborhood as a kid and hated that Dale wouldn’t be able to participate. And Dale was grateful for the help. "He thanked me, he cried a little bit, I got teary," says Coffey. "You could tell how much he appreciated it, and that's what makes it worth it."
