Daily Do Good: Man Donates Kidney, Saves Life Of Several Strangers

A Mississippi man decides to donate his kidney and ends up saving four lives. Bobby Browning was in a horrible car crash five years ago. Doctors didn’t think he would survive, but when he did, he felt like he owed a debt. Browning was so thankful for his second chance at life that he wanted to give someone else a chance too. So Browning decided to donate his kidney.

Doctors call someone who is donating a kidney without a donor in mind an altruistic anonymous donor. And what Browning didn’t know when he made the choice is that his donation would create a domino effect, ultimately leading to four lives being saved. Browning’s kidney went to Harry Peneguy, allowing Harry’s son Kyle to donate his kidney to Al Sonnier. That made it so Al's wife Christine could donate her kidney to Noah Stanley. And then Noah's mom Lisa was able to donate her kidney to Hoang Nguyen.

Professor of Surgery and kidney transplant program director at Tulane University Dr. Anil Paramesh says Browning’s example is why he became a transplant surgeon. “This is the goodness that humanity has,” he says. “These are the best of the best people that can do this.” He gathered at Tulane Hospital recently with the donors and recipients. Though they were mostly strangers, they were connected by their generosity. Paramesh uncovered their names on a white board one by one explaining how Browning’s donation had led to them all saving each others’ lives.
