Coffee drinkers say they don’t really ‘get going’ until they’ve had their first cup, and a study done by researchers at the University of California says they may be right. The study used 100 volunteers that wore continuously recording ECG devices to track their caffeine intake, movement, sleep, and health over two weeks.
The results showed that volunteers drinking coffee walked an extra 1,000 steps per day, with each cup increasing steps by 600. It wasn’t all good news, though; drinking coffee appeared to reduce sleep duration by 36 minutes for the first cup and 18 minutes for every cup afterward. The study also found an increase in abnormal heartbeats linked to coffee drinking.
