DDG: Huge Crowd Comes To Support Female Hockey Goalie After Heckling

A sold-out crowd shows up to support a female Pennsylvania high school hockey goalie as she returns to the ice following a brutal heckling incident two weeks prior. When Mars Area High School’s hockey team faced off against Armstrong High School last month, students from Armstrong chanted vulgarities at Mars’ female goalie. By the second period of the game, the goalie left the game in tears.

Video of the incident started making its rounds on social media and the reaction has been significant. The Mars hockey team returned to the ice this week to the cheers of nearly 1-thousand fans. A crowd of mostly strangers turned out to the game holding signs that read, “Girls are strong!” and “We belong on the ice!” Two-time Olympic medalist, Brianne McLaughlin-Bittle was in attendance at the game and 2018 Olympic gold medalist Meghan Duggan tweeted her support for the goalie.

Mars Area School District Superintendent Mark Gross says that his counterpart in the Armstong district reached out to apologize and to assure him that there will be a thorough investigation. And the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League has banned all Armstrong High School students from future games for the rest of the season. Also, the Mars Hockey Club Board of Directors released a statement condemning the incident and saying that the goalie can expect a formal apology from the Armstrong district and added “We are proud of our goalie both as a student athlete and for her resilience in persevering through these events.”
