Daily Do Good: Woman Puts Out Fire, Saving Elderly Resident And Dog

A customer service coordinator with Waste Management in southwest Florida is being praised for saving an elderly woman and her dog from a house fire. Eunice Warman was between stops on her job of estimating trash pickup costs when she saw smoke rising from a property. She investigated the source of the smoke and found a smoldering pile of mulch and flames burning the siding of a home in Rotonda West, a community northwest of Fort Myers.

Warman was already carrying the fire extinguisher from her vehicle, so she quickly went to work putting out the fire. “I was scared. You know, but it was adrenaline,” she recalls. “It was happening so fast.” What Warman didn’t know was that inside the home was its 80-year-old resident and her dog. Warman is credited with saving their lives.

The elderly woman’s roommate, Anthony Schepp, accidentally started the fire trying to smoke an iguana out of the home’s downspout. Schepp is grateful for Warman’s quick response. “God bless her for being at the right place at the right time,” he says. For her part, the hero gives credit to her training for knowing what to do. “We do more than garbage,” Warman says. “We help with anything that we could possibly do.”
