Daily Do Good: Postal Xpress Owner Helps Stop 2 Seniors From Being Scammed

The owner of a Postal Xpress shipping store in Union Grove, Wisconsin, has helped to prevent two different senior citizens from being scammed out of thousands of dollars. David Labrie, owner of a Postal Xpress south of Milwaukee, was suspicious when an elderly customer came into his store to overnight some photographs to Florida. The postage was going to be $130, so he asked her a few questions and found out she was really mailing $7-thousand in cash. She believed she was sending money to help her grandson out of a legal jam, but Labrie knew better.

He was aware of the type of “grandparent scam” that the woman was falling for, so Labrie intervened, saving her from losing the money. And then just two days later, another elderly woman came in trying to overnight some “documents” to California. Again, Labrie dug deeper and discovered the package actually contained $8-thousand in cash intended to help her grandson, who scammers claimed had been injured in a car crash. Labrie contacted the Ravine County Sheriffs after the second incident.

Labrie says the women were grateful that he caught the scam. He has pamphlets in his store with information about common scams to help would-be victims. Because he owns the store, he says he’s more invested in helping his customers, but admits not every shipping store is going to do that. He’s glad he was able to make a difference this time. “It’s just good to help the community,” he says.
