Daily Do Good: Florida Deputy Rescues Hiding Toddler From House Fire

A Florida deputy is being called a hero for rescuing a toddler from a burning home. Flagler County K-9 Deputy First Class Marcus Dawson responded to a call about a house on fire in Palm Coast this week. He was told by a neighbor that nobody was home, but the deputy circled the home to check. After knocking on the front door and getting no response, Dawson continued to check around the house.

When the deputy reached the back door, he heard barking inside the home. He went inside the screened back porch and opened up the sliding rear doors, allowing the dog to escape the smoke filled room. Video footage from the deputy’s body-cam shows him discovering a little boy hiding under a blanket in a bedroom at the rear of the house. Dawson carries the three-year-old safely out of the house to a firefighter in the front yard.

"Without DFC Dawson immediately running toward danger, even without a safety respirator, this could have been a much different outcome," Sheriff Rick Staly says. "Thankfully, DFC Dawson’s training in emergency response allowed him to find this child and safely rescue him." The sheriff’s office later determined that the father had left the sleeping boy with an older sibling while he went to pick up food. Deputies report that all three residents are safe and uninjured.
