Community members in Richland, Washington, came together to replace a family’s collection of inflatable Halloween decorations that were destroyed by vandals. When Laura Navarro discovered that vandals had cut all of their inflatable Halloween decorations she wasn’t just sad for the loss of the collection they’d built up over a few years. She was upset because her grandkids loved to play with them. "They come out here and they play around them," she says. "Every night they go to bed early just so that they can shut the lights off and [see] their pumpkins and everything on."
Navarro hoped to be able to replace just one of the expensive inflatables before Halloween. But thanks to the kindness of several people in the community, headed up by Richland firefighter Travis Courson, the Navarros have a whole new collection. Courson made it his personal mission to collect donations and buy new decorations for the family.
On Saturday, Courson and fellow firefighters showed up at the Navarro’s house to set up the new decorations. While some of the crew worked inflating the Halloween display, others treated the Navarro’s grandkids to a tour of the firetruck. To Courson, giving back to his community is important. "When kids are taken from, they lose that excitement,” he says. “I just like to do whatever I can to, you know, make it a better Halloween for them."
