DDG: Teen With Rare Condition Scores Special Goal For Field Hockey Team

It’s not often that the opposing team cheers when your team scores a goal, but that’s exactly what happened at a Ladue High School field hockey game recently. The athlete they were cheering for? That was Molly Katzman, an 18-year-old who was born with Fragile X syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes learning disabilities and behavior and social issues.

But it hasn’t affected the high school senior’s love of the game. Molly has been on the team for four years and is passionate about the sport. She’s friendly, always smiling and popular with her teammates for her positive attitude and enthusiasm. And her coach, Linda Porter, wants to get her on the field playing as much as possible this year, so she arranged a special opportunity for Molly to score a goal.

Porter cleared it with their opponent and when they gave the thumb’s up, Molly was ready with her stick. She scored a goal and the crowd went wild and started chanting her name. There wasn’t a dry eye among her friends, family and teammates and after celebrating her victory, all this athlete wants to know is if she can do it again at the next game.
