A Kentucky man has become a frequent blood donor to help save a woman he’s never met. Derrick Smith first donated blood at his job in February 2020 and months later, the Kentucky Blood Center ran a test and discovered he may be able to help a stranger’s illness.
Smith has a very rare antigen in his blood that not many people have and the blood center found it’s a perfect match for the woman. So last spring, he started coming in once a month to donate his platelets to help save the woman’s life.
“My favorite superhero is Captain America and he doesn’t hesitate to step up to help other people, and that’s kind of how I feel,” Smith says. “If someone needs help, you step up and help them.”
