A Colorado community stepped in to help when an elderly woman in need of a place to live. Ethel Runyon had been renting a house for 17 years in Lakewood, but when her landlord decided to sell it, she was forced to move. And she found she was priced out of the housing market in the area.
The 84-year-old is on a fixed income and she also needs a place that is wheelchair-accessible because she’s the caretaker for her 61-year-old son, who is disabled. Ethel searched for a suitable apartment, but she couldn’t afford the rent anywhere. Then some of her neighbors came together and spread the word of her situation.
Donations rolled in to get Ethel a new home and more than $17-thousand was raised. With that, she was able to find an apartment and pay the rent for an entire year, plus cover more than a year of expenses for her storage unit. “I am very grateful to everybody,” Ethel says, “and I plan to pay it forward.”
