Daily Do Good: FaceTime Leads To Rescue Of Men On Sinking Boat In Ocean

Connecticut police rescue two men from their sinking boat after locating them using visual clues in the background during a FaceTime call. Last week, two Massachusetts men boating off the coast of Long Island, New York, called 911 when they realized their boat was sinking. While they were on the phone with the dispatcher, Mariaha Knight, the boat capsized.

The men couldn’t exactly tell Knight where they were located, so she had them get on FaceTime so rescuers could use visual clues around them to try and pinpoint their location. The video call gave authorities the information they needed to find the stranded boaters and rescuers found the men a short time later.

When Lieutenant Michael Macek of the East Lyme Police in Connecticut found the men a quarter mile from the New York State border in the Long Island Sound, their boat was almost fully submerged. “One of the gentlemen had gone into the water and he was shivering pretty extensively,” Macek recalls. He credits the FaceTime call for them being able to get there before it was too late.
