A bus driver in the UK is being praised for helping a woman and her children flee from an abusive ex. Kyle Caswell, 18, was at the end of his shift as a bus driver in Swindon, England when a woman and her three children hopped on his bus. At first Caswell just thought she was rushing to catch the bus before it pulled away, but she told him they were actually running from her violent ex-partner who was trying to catch her.
The driver continued on his route, but when he reached the end of his shift he didn’t want to return to the bus station because it was close to where he’d picked up the woman and he didn’t think it would be safe for them there. So Caswell contacted his supervisor, explained the situation and asked for permission to take the woman to her relative’s home on the other side of town. The supervisor okayed the detour and told him to keep the woman and her children safe.
Since the story of the incident became public, the community has praised Caswell’s act of kindness. "We are all very proud of Kyle. He acted with maturity and humility,” says Paul Coyne, Swindon Bus Company operations manager. “He is very worthy of the praise he has received." The area’s representative in Parliament, Sir Robert Buckland, also praised Caswell saying people like him "make our community here in Swindon a better and safer place."
