Daily Do Good: Teens Decorate For Christmas For Woman In Hospice

A group of Arizona high school students put up Christmas decorations for a woman in hospice care. Nancy Mattern has been collecting Christmas decorations for 40 years. Christmas is the 77-year-old hospice patient’s favorite holiday. "It just brings out the part of people that you don't see the rest of the year," she says.

Since she caught COVID last year, she hasn’t been able to decorate her Tucson home like she normally would. "It affected my heart and my lungs,” she says. “To be able to do the little things now is really hard." Nancy’s daughter Trina Mattern, who suffers from a work injury, was also unable to decorate for her mother “It’s been very heartbreaking to see her so sad during the holidays because we couldn’t put any decorations for her,” she says.

That changed this past weekend when a group of students from the University High School Dreamcatchers Club came to spread some Christmas cheer at Mattern’s home. The group grants wishes for hospice care patients and they showed up to decorate her home inside and out, deliver presents and treats to her, and to play festive music. The kind gesture meant everything to Mattern. “To be able to have my Christmas decorations up is something I thought was over and done with,” she says. “But these kids with their big hearts are making it happen.”
