A California teacher is driving home a lesson to his students. Dave Dein leads one of the first high school truck driving programs in the country that teaches students the basics of driving large commercial trucks. But during his break from lessons this summer, he’s changing gears to be a truck driver to help during a severe driver shortage.
While on summer vacation from Patterson High School, Dein is driving a big rig. He’s also using his pay to pay it forward, by donating all of his earnings from the side gig to the school for a scholarship fund for his students. He’s giving his paychecks to the Next Generation In Trucking Foundation and Morning Star Trucking has pledged to match that amount.
Dein is passionate about what he does, explaining, “The thing is, I don’t consider this work.” As for not bringing home his pay, he claims, “I’m not giving up anything. I love this, for one thing, and to do it for such a good cause? That’s even better.”
