A little girl in Ohio is hard at work to help raise money for an inclusive playground in her community. Gwen Ciccozzi had a stroke before she was even born and her family didn’t know if she would walk, talk or be able to understand what people are saying. She was once wheelchair-bound as a result of her health condition and that made visits to regular playgrounds a challenge.
“Playgrounds were very and sometimes still are very difficult,” explains Gwen’s mom, Rebeccca. “Traditional playgrounds with wood chips and clumbers are just something that Gwen really struggled with.”
So her family drives about 40-minutes away to the nearest inclusive playground where Gwen can play. Her hometown of Brunswick has now approved plans to build their own inclusive playground, but it comes with a hefty $350-thousand price tag. So while the city works on large-scale fundraisers and getting approved for grants for the project, this seven-year-old is chipping in to help raise money by selling lemonade. She’s giving every dollar raised from “Gwennie Penny’s Lemonade” to the playground she’s always wanted.
