Daily Do Good: Dad Saves Child’s Life Using CPR Learned From “The Office”

A father saved his daughter’s life using skills he learned on the show “The Office.” Matt Uber was playing a game of tag with his four-year-old, Vera, at their Indiana home when she collapsed. He wasn’t sure what happened, but as he was trying to think about CPR, his mind went to that episode of “The Office,” where they’re doing CPR training and doing compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive.”

So without any formal training, Uber started chest compressions and breaths until paramedics arrived. And his quick response helped to save Vera’s life. Doctors discovered Vera experienced cardiac arrest and looked for answers as to why a healthy four-year-old had this scary medical emergency. Genetic testing and other tests revealed she has a very rare and life-threatening condition (calmodulinopathy) that causes arrhythmia in young people.

Doctors then implanted a device that will shock her heart if it happens again. Now the preschooler is back to enjoying life, and her dad says, “She is feeling normal, acting normal, happy, and causing trouble like every four-year-old should.” After their experience, her parents are encouraging everyone to learn the basics of CPR. “Just take the time to get this foundation,” Uber says. “CPR is not a difficult skill, but it can change the world.”
