A school resource officer at Firelands Local Schools in Ohio is going above and beyond to help one student succeed. Lorain County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Northeim has formed a special bond with 10-year-old Ricky Hillis, who has autism. He’s been working with him daily since he started struggling in school and it’s had a positive impact.
When Ricky hit a rough patch, his mom,Stephanie Hillis,says he didn’t want to do anything and wouldn’t even eat. His buddy Deputy Northeim started eating lunch with him, which got him to eat, and he began walking him to class and checking in every day and now Ricky looks forward to going to school and he’s made a lot of progress.
Ricky is selectively mute and doesn’t like reading in front of people, but he felt comfortable enough with his buddy Northeim to read a book with him at Christmas. When his mom saw a video of that magic moment, she saw just how special their relationship is. “I got it on Christmas morning and that was like, the best Christmas present ever,” Hillis says.
