An 80-year-old California man is being recognized as a hero for saving a man who was trapped inside his car after driving into a canal. Steve Montelongo watched the accident unfold in Modesto and jumped into action to rescue the driver.
He watched the water rushing into the car and the man behind the wheel start to panic, so Montelongo grabbed his shirt and pulled him out. Tom Olsen with the California Highway Patrol explains that a lot of people are in the right place at the right time, but very few do what Montelongo did. “Well, it appears by all accounts on paper that he’s 80 years old,” he says, “but his attitude is much younger than that.”
While this life-saver says he doesn’t consider himself a hero, others disagree. And it’s not even the first time he’s come to the rescue of others. A few years ago, he was at a church meeting when a home nearby exploded with a couple trapped inside and he ran to help them escape. Now that’s the kinda guy you want to have around in an emergency!
