Daily Do Good: Helicopter Reporters Find & Save Man Trapped In River

A man who was separated from his friends during a trip to the North Canadian River in Oklahoma was saved by a helicopter pilot and a reporter who were already in the air. KFOR Chopper Four Pilot Mason Dunn and Managing Editor Steve Johnson were covering news events when they got a call that the man was being searched for and they pitched in to help.

David Stokes has been enjoying a day on the river with his pals, but became stranded when he got lost and because he only has one leg, he didn’t have the strength to swim to shore. He had been in the water for 20-hours when they spotted him, landed, and Johnson brought him back to the shore line. The area they found Stokes in was so remote, the sheriff’s department and Shawnee Search and Rescue crews couldn’t find it after searching all night.

The guys from the TV station helped get rescue crews to Stokes and he was airlifted to an Oklahoma City hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Dunn says helping out gave him chills and Johnson says, “I’d do that again in a heartbeat. I’m so thankful.”
