Daily Do Good: Teen Swims 600 Yards To Save Family After Boat Capsizes

A family fishing trip became dangerous when their boat capsized, but a brave teen saved her sister and father by swimming 600 yards to shore for help. Kiana French was fishing with her dad and 14-year-old sister on Parlin Pond in western Maine when their boat started taking on water. She tried to get the water out using her sister’s boot, but they were in the water moments later.

The 16-year-old says her dad was “in shock” and just “hung onto the boat,” but she knew she had to act fast, so she started swimming to shore. She made it the 18-hundred feet and started screaming for help and luckily an off-duty game warden’s wife heard her. Soon Kris MacCabe and his neighbor found her and took her in a boat to rescue her dad and sister. They were already suffering from hypothermia according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, but didn’t need medical treatment and they’re okay now.
