DDG: College Student Works 32-Hr Shift Alone At Hotel During Flood

A young hotel employee in Texas is being hailed as a hero after pulling in a 32-hour shift — alone — to help guests stranded by Tropical Storm Imelda. 21-year-old Satchel Smith clocked in at the Homewood Suites in Beaumont at 3 p.m. last Wednesday, expecting to work his regular shift before getting trapped by heavy flooding. But when the storm prevented other workers from making it in, Smith became a jack-of-all-trades until he was finally relieved at 9:30 p.m. Friday after the storm subsided, according to WFAA. His dedication did not go unnoticed — and a post from a guest calling him “our hero” has gone viral, garnering 54,000 reactions on Facebook by Monday afternoon. Smith admitted to CNN that working through the storm had been “pretty intense” — especially because he had to try to fill every hotel staff role. “I’d never worked in a kitchen,” he said. “I’m not really a good cook.” But the guests also chipped in to help. “The guests were very helpful,” he said. “It was basically like a big family.”
