A World War II veteran in Pennsylvania who had to drop out of high school to support his family has finally gotten his diploma. It’s taken 91-year-old Pete Sabedra eight decades to receive it, but in a special awards ceremony, he walked across the stage at Derry Area Middle School to accept his degree. And to make the occasion even more special, the vet’s grandson, Kace, who will also be graduating from the district’s high school on May 31st, was right there by his side.
Sabedra was in the eighth grade when his father died and he and his older brother had to leave school to start working to take care of his family. The brothers worked for the railroad before enlisting in the military and being sent to Germany. Now he says “it’s something” to finally have that high school diploma.
