The next time you call out your cats name and it ignores you, understand that they actually know their names. A new study suggests household cats can respond to the sound of their own names which means they really are just ignoring us when they don't respond. Scientists say they’ve provided the first experimental evidence that cats can distinguish between words that we people say. So like dogs, whose communication with people has been studied a lot more, they know what you're saying. One of the lead researchers said that “cats are paying attention to you, what you say and what you do, and they’re learning from it.” Remember that next time you call out for your little kitty.
