While visiting the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine,Benjamin Ball was disappointed that he couldn’t get a paper straw for his lemonade at the store’s cafe, where they only offered plastic straws. So this seven-year-old sea turtle and ocean life lover decided to take action by writing a letter to the president and CEO of L.L. Bean,Steve Smith.
“I’m writing to you because I’m a friend of the Sea Turtles and I want to protect them,” the letter reads. “Marine animals get killed by plastic in the Ocean. The Sea Turtles are important to the ecosystem and me.”
Benjamin noted that he knows L.L. Bean cares about the Earth too and asked if they could switch to paper straws instead of plastic. And within 24 hours, the kid got a response from the head honcho, who assured him he’d look into the issue.
Smith says the letter was really articulate and well-reasoned and that it hit him in an emotional way. Now the company is converting its retail affiliates and employee cafeterias to 100% corn biodegradable straws. Smith explains,”This letter hit at the absolutely perfect time with a fantastic idea.”
