A few weeks before Amanda Rico’s 30th birthday, she was busy making a Pinterest board with things she wanted at her big birthday bash. But a children’s book she was reading to her young sons one night about a little boy who had never had a birthday party led her to have a change of heart.
Rico decided to help other kids who hadn’t experienced their own birthday party or celebration before by giving them one instead of the party she wanted for herself. The San Antonio mom enlisted help from her wedding planner, Bryan Boyd, who helped her get catering, a photo booth, a videographer, a balloon artist, a DJ and other party essentials for the event. They surprised 130 abused and neglected kids who live at the St. PJ’s Children’s Home with a night they’ll never forget. And Rico started a GoFundMe, raising $1,500 to buy clothes, shoes, and other items the home needs for their young residents.
“I want my kids to know from this event that they can make a difference, and if it is an idea, to not think it is crazy,” Rico explains. “Make it happen. I want them to be humanitarian and humble and to live that legacy. Have an open heart for others.”
