High-stakes poker and Buddhism may seem like a strange match, but they go hand-in-hand for Scott Wellenbach. The Canadian poker player is also a practitioner of Buddhism and he just won big at a poker tournament in the Bahamas, he came in third but still walked away with $671,240.
But Wellenbach isn’t planning how he’s going to spend his new fortune. Instead, he’ll be donating his winnings to charity, as usual. The generous habit has even earned him a nickname: “the people’s hero.” He gives to several Buddhist charities, along with Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders.
“Being a practitioner of Buddhism, we sit around and meditate a lot,” Wellenbach says, “and that’s free.”
