An entrepreneur who travels the world for a living is donating hundreds of thousands of frequent flyer miles to people who want to spend the holidays with loved ones but can’t afford a flight. Peter Shankman racks up so many miles flying all over for work and doesn’t care to use his free time traveling, so for the fifth year in a row, he’s giving them away to those who really need them.
Shankman posts his contest on the social media site Imgur, where people who want to travel enter and other Imgur users vote for the winners of the miles. After the first year of the giveaway, other travelers saw what Shankman was doing and started donating their miles to his contest, so they had more miles to share.
This year Shankman donated about 200,000 frequent flyer miles and other kind folks kicked in 100,000, and the total of 300,000 miles will let five families be reunited for Christmas. This year’s winners include a woman flying to see her dying grandfather, a couple going to spend the holidays with their family of 30, and brothers who are flying to spend Christmas with their mom for the first time in years.
“There are a lot of people who can’t afford to buy these tickets on their own,” Shankman says. “I can’t think of a better way to use frequent flyer miles.”
