Driver Arrested, Student Rescued After School Bus Swept Away by Floodwater

Nathan DeYoung had one more child to drop off and came across a barricade and flooded roadway. Instead of turning around, the bus’ dash cam shows DeYoung driving around the barricade, entering the flooded area and the bus getting pushed sideways into trees.

According to the boy’s mother, Ashley Ringstaff, he called her thinking he was going to die. Leander Police have arrested the driver and and charged with endangerment of a child and failure to obey warning signs as a result of the Oct. 16 incident. He was later released on $10,000 bond.

Leander Police said in a Facebook post. "For each foot the water rises up the side of the vehicle, the vehicle displaces 1,500 lbs. of water. In effect, the vehicle weighs 1,500 lbs. less for each foot the water rises. Just two feet of water can carry away most vehicles."

The boy was uninjured, but left exhausted and scared.
