Police have identified the victim and suspect following a deadly shooting last night at the University of Utah. Investigators say 37-year-old Melvin Rowland shot and killed Lauren McCluskey, a senior student-athlete and standout on the school's Track and Field team. According to police, Rowland killed himself at Trinity AME Church before officers could find him. Investigators believe the suspect and victim were involved in a previous relationship. The University has canceled all classes today, but says the Counseling Center and other support resources are available students.
The family of Lauren McCluskey is discussing her relationship history with the man police believe shot and killed her. According to the family, Melvin Rowland had lied to Lauren about his name, age and his status as a registered sex offender. Lauren apparently ended the relationship two weeks ago and later reported that she was being harassed by Rowland and his friends. University of Utah Police say they were working an active case against Rowland after meeting with the victim earlier this month.
