An Arizona father and son are helping families keep their cars on the road by fixing them for whatever customers can afford. Michael Kuba started the nonprofit Junkie Garage after teaching himself to repair his own van’s air conditioning rather than pay a nearly $4-thousand repair bill.
Customers bring the necessary parts and donate whatever they can for labor, with no income checks or questions about their financial situation. The garage handles jobs including air conditioning, brakes, suspension, batteries and alternators, and Kuba says customers typically spend less than $300 on an AC repair that could otherwise cost thousands.
Kuba’s 16-year-old son Matthew has worked alongside him since he was eight, learning automotive skills while helping their community. The DIY mechanic hopes to eventually expand into a larger shop with volunteer technicians so they can help even more people.
