After a powerful tornado destroyed a home in Enid, Oklahoma, two pet goats helped rescuers locate a family trapped beneath the debris. The Sloat family had taken shelter in a cellar as the storm tore through their neighborhood, but heavy debris collapsed over the cellar door and left them unable to escape. Mary Sloat says they could hear glass shattering, bricks falling and the cellar door denting during the tornado.
Above ground, much of the property had been destroyed, including the goats’ shelter, which the family says had completely disappeared. They feared their goats, Percy and Penny, hadn’t survived the storm, but while trapped underground, Mary and her daughter say they thought they heard goat noises nearby. The goats had survived and were standing on top of the pile of bricks covering the cellar.
When rescuers arrived, they noticed Percy and Penny standing in one spot and believed the cellar was likely underneath them. The goats’ location helped rescuers identify where the family was trapped and begin digging through the rubble. The Sloat family was later pulled to safety, and Mary says she will always remember the goats’ actions, even on days when they’re being difficult.
