Earlier this month, surfers in Santa Cruz, California, helped rescue six people after a small motor boat capsized near the famous local surfer spot Steamer Lane. The boat, carrying two adults and four children, collided with a wave and overturned, throwing passengers into the water, some without life jackets.
About 10 surfers, including two 14 year olds and big wave champion Darryl “Flea” Virostko, quickly paddled toward the group and pulled the injured passengers onto their boards. Virostko says the community acted together as one team, and he carried an adult man who was calling out for his children.
Harbor patrol boats and ambulances arrived within minutes, and the passengers were taken to a hospital where they are recovering, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department. Fire Chief Rob Oatey recently met with several of the surfers to thank them for their lifesaving actions.
