FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3 From Food, Drinks In U.S.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is pulling the plug on Red No. 3, a synthetic dye known for its vibrant cherry-red hue, but also linked to cancer in lab animals. Used in everything from candies and cereals to fruit cocktail cherries, this petroleum-based colorant has sparked concern for decades. Manufacturers have until 2027 to phase it out of foods, while ingested drugs like supplements get an extra year. This long-awaited move aligns the U.S. with countries that already restrict the dye, marking a win for advocates pushing for safer food options.
