A Virginia woman battling ALS received an early Christmas celebration organized by her community. This past weekend, friends and neighbors in Chesterfield County gathered outside the home of Tracy Demeyer to sing Christmas carols and spread holiday cheer. Their goal was to make sure that Tracy, whose condition is terminal, was able to experience the joy of Christmas despite her limited time.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare, progressive and fatal disease that destroys the body’s nerve cells. Tracy, a mother of two, has been living with the disease for several years. Her friend Rita Monteiro described the gathering as “a beautiful and festive occasion” meant to honor Tracy and her love for Christmas.
On Saturday evening, the street outside her home was a joyful and heartwarming scene, with carolers joining Tracy as she sang Christmas songs from her porch surrounded by family and friends. Her son Brian Demeyer was grateful for the holiday gathering, calling the turnout “incredible” and noting how much caroling has always meant to his mom. Tracy’s loved-ones expressed hope that the evening will help to carry her through the days she has left.
