For some people, being on TV is the chance of a lifetime, but it might have saved the life of a North Carolina woman. When Nicole McGuinness of Havelock was featured on HGTV’s “Beachfront Bargain Hunt” to celebrate the end of her brain cancer treatments, an eagle-eyed doctor who was watching at home saw a lump on her neck.
Dr. Erich Voigt, an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, put the power of social media to work to get a message to McGuinness that she should get a sonogram and a biopsy. Thankfully, she listened and went to see a specialist and was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.
McGuinness says she’s forever grateful for Dr. Voight reaching out and being vigilant. She’ll be getting treatment soon and says she’s ready to beat cancer for the second time in two years.
"I feel extremely blessed," McGuinness said. "It's just, in my opinion, a miracle that he saw it and was able to reach out to me and that I had it checked out immediately."
