If there’s one medication that you don’t want to take any chances with, it’s birth control pills. That’s why the recent packaging mix-up with Mibelas 24 Fe tablets is so scary. Lupin Pharmaceuticals announced last month that somehow their contraceptive pills got swapped with the non-hormonal placebos, so users could have been taking placebos thinking they were taking oral contraceptives. Whoops – can’t even begin to cover that error!
The pill packs come with 28 pills, 24 with the active ingredient - the one that keeps you from getting pregnant - and four placebos so you stay in the habit of taking the pills every day. But somehow the blister pack for these pills got turned 180, reversing the weekly orientation. That means the first four days of the pill pack would be non-hormonal placebos, not the pills that keep you pregnancy-free.
"As a result of this packaging error, oral contraceptive tablets that are taken out of sequence may place the user at risk for contraceptive failure and unintended pregnancy," the company says in a statement. "The reversing the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the tablets out of order."
Thankfully, the company realized what happened and let customers know quickly and no reported cases of any health consequences have been reported. But that’s a potentially life-changing mix up!
