Daily Do Good: “Books N Bros” Reading Club Started By 11-Year-Old

Sidney Keys III wanted to show other boys that reading is fun, so the 11-year-old started a reading club called Books N Bros. He was inspired to do it after a visit to the EyeSeeMe bookstore, that’s filled with African-American children’s literature - something he hadn’t seen so much of before.

"Every time I go to the library at my school,” he explains, “there aren’t many African-American literature books there.” But at EyeSeeMe, Keys got the idea to help his friends see reading as something positive and entertaining. So he and his mom came up with a plan for his reading club.

Books N Bros is for boys from all backgrounds, but their target is eight to ten year olds, because that’s when kids start to fall behind in reading. After paying a $20 membership fee, the boys get a book, worksheets asking about the books, and refreshments at their monthly meetings. So far they’ve read three books and hope to read many more.
