Daily Do Good: Vegas Woman Reunites With Dog Missing For 9 Years

Back in February of 2015, Judy Monarrez’s then two-year-old chihuahua mix Gizmo, along with two of her other dogs, got out of the backyard of her family’s Las Vegas home through an open gate. Neighbors helped wrangle the two dogs, but Monarrez says a stranger found Gizmo and told a witness that she was going to take him to have him scanned for a microchip. The family never heard from the stranger.

For weeks, Monarrez continued to search for Gizmo, putting up fliers, posting online, and even paying for community robo-calls, but she wasn’t able to track down her beloved pup. As the years passed, she would post online periodically that she was still looking for him, but never received any word. Then just when she was losing hope and accepting the possibility of never seeing him again, an email from the pet microchip company brought the miraculous news that Gizmo had been located at a nearby animal shelter.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Monarrez rushed to the shelter to be reunited with Gizmo, who was in poor health but alive. Gizmo had matted fur, long nails, missing teeth, and a crooked posture, but the family is now focused on nursing him back to health, despite the mounting medical costs. Monarrez, who’s a teacher, has turned to their community for help in supporting Gizmo's recovery, while he receives plenty of love and care at home.
