Daily Do Good: During Bus Driver Shortage, Principal Drives Kids Home

A Kentucky principal is stepping up for her students by sliding behind the wheel of a school bus. Janet Throgmorton is still the head of Fancy Farm Elementary School, but with a shortage of bus drivers during the pandemic, she’s also doing double duty to get kids to and from school.

Throgmorton has been principal there for 11 years and two years ago, she got her commercial driver’s license so she could sub as a bus driver during field trips to save the district money. She’s worn many hats lately, pitching in for cafeteria staff, picking up students in her own car after they miss the bus and making house calls to help remote learners with tech difficulties.

“You help where you need to help because that’s what you need to do,” the principal explains. “We’ve been short custodians, so you take out the trash. Our goal for the entire school year is to have kids in these buildings because we definitely believe that’s where the best learning takes place.”
